Ragazze d’Italia
Is there a black Italian Identity?
The project Ragazze d’Italia starts from that question. It starts from the desire to understand how second generations Italians of African descent build their own national and cultural identity in a fast changing Italy. Together with the words of journalist Marta Bellingreri, the aim of the project is to trace a choral geography of Italian young women living in Milan , Rome and Naples who struggle every day to fight prejudices in their working environments and the stigmatization of the black female body within the Italian context. By hand writing on paper an emotional response to the provocative question of “what does it mean to be a black Italian” the project wishes to create a unique emotional portrait of a generation that is brave enough to take alternative paths to affirm themselves.
